Remote Work Scams – The 70 to 1 Odds Against You and Tips You Need To Protect Yourself

There are a lot of scammers out there, heartless, pathetic thieves, lacking in both conscience and character, stealing money from gullible people on the internet, don’t be their next victim.

Remote work scams are thriving, especially on the internet.  It’s human nature to want the easy way out, I do it, you do it, everyone does it. So don’t beat yourself up for being naive.

Internet scammers prey on people’s desperation, greed and hope simultaneously. The statistics on remote work scams are mind-boggling. According to a CBS Denver report,

For every one legitimate work-at-home job posted online, there are about 70 scams.

Seriously? 70-1 odds, you have much better chances in a Las Vegas casino.

The bottom line: If it sounds to good to be true, it very very very likely is, so use common sense.

So how do can you avoid being scammed? Watch out for and pay attention to the warning signs.

1. Run away from any advertisement that asks for your hard-earned money.

Repeat, a legitimate job will almost never require you to pay them up front for any of the following:

  • Registration fees.
  • Training or training materials.
  • Supplies.
  • Processing fees.
  • Deposits.

There may be some rare exceptions, but I wouldn’t take my chances.

In the same CBS Denver report, according to Alpine Access President and CEO Chris Carrington,

never pay a company for training, speak with someone — firms that want to scam you will never talk to you, and a legitimate home-based company will pay you every two weeks.

2. Before responding to an advertisement, Google the company’s name with the word “scam” after it.

There are definitely exceptions to this tip, unfortunately there are a lot of weirdo’s and crazy people in the world who take great joy in hating companies or past employers that they incorrectly perceive to have wronged them.

What you are looking for is volume and diversity in responses.  It will become obvious quickly whether or not it is a scam.  It’s like pornography, I don’t know how to define it, but I know it when I see it.

3. Use alternatives to “Work at Home” or “Work from Home” in your search.

Instead, search on terms like remote jobs, telework, or telecommute. These terms are less scam prone in searches. Also try to keep your search limited to legitimate remote job sites.

4. Don’t respond to unsolicited emails, especially those with a lot of punctuation like “!!!”.

Think about it, if you have ever hired someone or outsourced work, did you send out emails to random strangers? Of course not.  Mark these emails as spam, and don’t even open them, many contain viruses or are part of phishing scams.

5. Use common sense.

This is obvious, but we all make dumb, emotionally driven decisions from time to time. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. There is no Santa Claus, there is no Easter Bunny, so why would you likewise expect a random stranger to email you an opportunity to make thousands of dollars per month from home?

Because they don’t.

What to do if you are scammed.

If you already have been or ever are caught in a scam, contact your local authorities immediately.  It’s important to report the scammers so other people are spared the financial and emotional misery these scams can cause.

4 Reasons Why Working At Home Sucks and What You Can Do About It

It’s the holy grail of employment, contracting, freelancing, and self-employment, work at home or work wherever the heck you want, whenever the heck you want.

Or is it that great?

Working at Home sucks. Not all the time, but sometimes is absolutely sucks. After ten years of working at least part-time from home, among other locations, the following have happened to me and can happen to you.

1. I’m getting really tired of looking at the same wall, window, fake deer in the backyard, or (insert your surroundings here).

I get tired of the same two or three different views. Some days, if I see one more light beige wall and fancy decoration, I will going to jump out the window.  Change of scenery is important after a while, for your mental health and your creativity.

Suggestion: Make sure you get out every couple of hours and walk, drive, go get a coffee, go get the mail, anything for that matter, that breaks up the scenery for a few minutes or more.

2. I don’t sit and stare at my handheld, laptop, or other device twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, do you?

Honestly, why does everyone expect instant responses to email and texts? When did every stupid mundane or unimportant issue become a general emergency? This is especially true for the work at home, why? because we feel guilty for all the poor suckers stuck in their cubicles.

Suggestion: Set a daily schedule, and stick to it. Also set some expectations and boundaries around how and when people should contact you. I always tell those I work with to call me if it needs immediate attention, or expect to wait.

3. Time off is time off. No, I don’t want to work from the beach on my Caribbean vacation.

Meetings scheduled while you are on planned vacation? Anxious emails and issues to solve? Time for a revolt. Working remotely doesn’t mean working every day of the year.

Suggestion: Make it clear that you will not be checking email or voicemail on vacation.  Make an unclear inconvenient path to reach you in case of emergency, ie. call your cousins deaf uncle, who will email the beachside town and have a letter hand delivered to you on the beach by a midget. Crazy? Yes, but it makes the point.

4. Acts of God really do happen at home just like they do at the office.

Sometimes there are power outages, internet outages, hurricanes, tornadoes, snowstorms, hard disk meltdowns, and a one in five hundred chance the dog will pee on your laptop and cause a short-circuit. Life happens, nothing more to say.

Suggestion: Be prepared as best you can, then just be honest when the poop hits the fan.

Some form of Remote work is the quickest path to independence, YOU can achieve this freedom in six months or less.

Are you fed up yet? Tired of dragging your tired butt back and forth to some gray cubicle prison Monday through Friday?

Is this your dream life for the next twenty five years? Tired of the corporate treadmill while some jerk in a blue suit gambles the fruits of your labor on Wall Street or buys another vacation home while you work overtime?

If you said yes, and you love the confining walls and wasted potential that has become your life, then please leave now, this is not for you, get lost!

If you said heck no! Then I can help you. But you have to commit to working your butt off for the next six months. There is no free ride in life.

Samuel Goldwyn said it best.

“The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

Dreaming will not get you there, wishful thinking will not get you there, someday will not get you there. Someday does not come, ever.  So pick your sorry self up and dust yourself off.

To remote work your way to freedom and independence, they key word is work, and not just work, but hard work.

If anyone promises you anything different from hard work, or some magic shortcut, they are lying to you. You must take massive focused action starting today if you want to be free.

The good news is that you can start today and still achieve your location independence in 2012. It’s not too late, even if you do not know where or how to begin.

Never in history have we had so many opportunities to thrive. The world has truly opened up the floodgates of prosperity.

For the first time ever, anyone can work from anywhere doing almost anything.

Don’t just listen to me, look at what real, every day people have been achieving.

When I say everyday people, I mean normal, middle class folks without money or connections who quickly achieved location (and in some cases financial) independence with smart, focused hard work.

Here are just a few examples from thousands.

Massive action one month at a time can get you on the beach of your choice this year.

Ready to get started?

If you need more motivation to change, this isn’t for you.  If you are fed up and ready for change, then read on.

Let’s dive into the six steps to remote work your way to location independence in six months, the massive action starts now. Stop procrastinating.

1. Month One – Wheres your beach?

Do you really want the location independent lifestyle? Are you trying to be trendy or hip, a poser or a fake, or do you genuinely want to your freedom?

There is a surefire method of determining whether location and possibly financial freedom are what you truly want. I can tell you from these three questions.

1. Are you always putting things off for “someday”?

2. Where do you spend your disposable income?

3. What do you talk about, think about, dream about, and read about in your free time?

The bottom line is that your actions determine your results. It’s that simple.

Are you moving toward location independence or just floating through life? Or put another way, where is your beach? Beach being a metaphor for what you would do if you won the lottery.

In month one, I want you to think about your motivation and especially your “why”.  You will not be successful until you understand your why.  Then you can galvanize your resources, time and effort toward remote work freedom.

Action Items:

  • Define a day in your ideal life, include the who, what, where, when, and why.
  • Write down separate lists of what is working in your life and what is not working.
  • Write down a list of your”why” or “whys” to get to the root of your motivation and what it is you really want.
  • Why do you want location independence?
  • Why do you want change in your life?
  • Why are you not happy with your current circumstances?
  • Do you need to change your whys?
  • Write out what your ideal life looks like in six months, in a year, in five years, in ten years.
  • Set your independence day.

Are you satisfied with your life the way it is now? If yes, congratulations, you are already on your beach! You can stop reading this and go back to enjoying your life.

If no, then lets continue.

2. Month Two – Lets take a look in your toolbox? You already have everything you need to get started today.

No matter who you are or where you are, you have some unique talent, gift or skill that you can use to achieve your remote work independence.

Maybe you don’t have the right tools or enough tools yet? You can start getting them today, but first you need to assess what your current starting point is.

You have to start where you are with what you have. I recommend completing the next exercise with someone who knows you and your situation well. Time to do an inventory of your life.

Action Items:

  • What skills, talents, abilities, training, education, and experience do you have?
  • What are you good at?
  • What do you enjoy?
  • What have you been successful at?
  • What makes you special?
  • What mental, emotional, physical, and financial assets do you have? Write it all down, then give yourself a big pat on the back, because you are a winner!
  • What do you want to learn?
  • What excites you? Define it.

Be real and honest with yourself.  Wherever and however you are starting out, can can always learn and acquire any skill or knowledge you need.

Tony Robins was a broke, overweight loser living in an apartment so small he had to wash his dishes in his bathtub and he turned his life around to become the top motivational speaker in history.

Always use your strengths as a starting point. It is a hundred times easier to enhance your strengths than overcome your weaknesses.

3. Month Three – So many options. Whats your muse? Figuring out your how.

There are many methods to achieve location independence, you just need to find one that is a good fit for you.  In my opinion, here are the best opportunities in order for creating a long term remote work lifestyle.

Tim Ferris refers to this as a muse in the Four Hour Work Week. I can it your remote work vehicle.

1. Start a location independent outsourced business. The best opportunity is a web based business that only requires a computer, internet connection, and telephone.

2. Become an independent consultant or freelancer.  James Clear has excellent resources on becoming a freelancer over at Passive Panda.

3. Work remotely as an employee or contractor. Read or free guide, Working Without Walls.

There are many other paths, but in my opinion, these are the top three.  Just don’t lock yourself down to a physical location. Tough to do if you are an ambulance Driver for example. But not tough to do in many other professions and businesses.

The key is finding the intersection of;

  • What you enjoy.
  • What you are good at.
  • What people will pay you for.

You need to find your sweet spot regardless of what vehicle you choose for location independent remote work.

Action Items:

  • Research your options and select a remote work vehicle. Find your sweet spot. If you decide to take the freelancer or employee path, check out our Remote Jobs page.
  • List and rank three viable options.
  • Start part-time immediately with option one.

There is never a perfect idea, perfect time, or perfect way. Procrastination is the great dream killer.  Do you best to select a viable idea, then start immediately and adjust as you go.

4. Month Four – Just start. Go from “passive action” into “massive action”

In month three you selected and started part-time with a viable remote work vehicle (business, consulting, freelance, or employee). By now you should either be profitable or move on to the next idea on your list.

If you are starting again with a new idea, please return to month three and repeat the process, see you again next month.

If you are profitable part-time, continue building up your income.

Action Items:

  • Continue building up your income with your idea from month three.

5. Month Five – You can’t take it with you. Removing the anchors holding you down in your life.

Anchors in your life hold you down and prevent you from your goal of  independence. Common anchors commonly include;

  • Fear
  • Possessions
  • Debt
  • Bad Relationships
  • Bad decisions

I recommend you start with a clean slate and a clear head.  Any baggage that ties up your brain and productive bandwidth needs to go.

Scared of the unknown? What do you really have to lose, you can always come back to your current or a new cubicle prison.

Stuck on the consumption / debt / keep up with the Jones-es treadmill? Sell your crap, simplify your life and pay down our debt.

Bad relationships holding you down? Maybe you need to change your friends and hang out with successful people who have achieved what you want to achieve. After all, you are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.

Action Items:

  • Simplify your life and clean the slate.

6. Month Six – It’s Official, make your escape.

Congratulations, you have successfully completed months one through five.  Time to make your escape.  Good luck.

Your Employer Does Not Want A Remote Work Policy

It’s true. Your employer does not want a Remote Work Policy in general, or a Remote Work Agreement with you specifically.

As strange as it sounds, its true.

This is one example where our Corporate Masters want to be able to control us indirectly.

OK, maybe that is a little harsh, so lets just say employers want to keep their options open and flexible, and leave it at that to play nice.

A Remote Work Policy locks your employer into a contract with you.

This is usually a good thing from an employer and employee perspective.  However, until remote work gains more widespread acceptance, this is an exception to the rule from an employer perspective.

Before we get into the “why” it benefits you more, lets review what elements are typically included in a Remote Work Policy.

If you want to learn more, here are a couple of good examples of what is included in a Remote Work Agreement from About.com and Web Worker Daily.

In general, it includes one or more of the following:

  • Schedule and hours
  • Contact and communication policy or protocols
  • Scope of work and expected outputs
  • Who provides the equipment, internet and telephone
  • Security policies
  • Reimbursement of expenses
  • Work space requirements
  • Conditions warranting a termination of the agreement

Read the list above again, do you see where the advantage sways toward the employee?

The advantages are in your favor because;

  1. The policy is negotiable. You can make tradeoffs for what is really important for you.
  2. Its contractual and must be obligated to.
  3. Its predictable (this is the biggest benefit in my opinion).

This is much better than having your remote work fate determined by the whim of your boss of some new HR Director.

Additionally, you can usually negotiate the conditions. Otherwise your remote work days and conditions could change on a regular basis and in an unpredictable way.

Your employer does not want this because they want to keep their options open.

If you get an opportunity to sign a formal agreement outlining your remote work, I recommend you take it. Note: I am not a legal counsel, this is my opinion, so check with them before agreeing to any contract if you are unsure.

Are People Who Work At Home More Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise?

Are people who work at home more successful than the rest of us? They better be, because they have so many advantages over everyone else who has to drag their butt into an office every day.

Think about it for a minute, who has the better overall quality of life?

1. The worker who saves an hour or more of daily commuting, works in comfortable clothing, eats healthier food, has lower overall stress and higher job satisfaction, and works more productive hours, thus a happier employer. All because they are measured on results and given a reasonable measure of freedom and flexibility.

Or

2. Their tired, rushed, stressed out, unhealthy peer who spends half the day pretending to work while they gossip at the water cooler or “look busy” while reading news on the internet.

I think the answer is self-evident, people who work at home have every reason to be more healthy, wealthy and wise.

And that’s not even counting all the other benefits to society at large;

1. Less traffic congestion and air pollution.

2. Lower overhead costs for employers.

3. Less absenteeism and turnover.

4. Higher life satisfaction.

5. A wider talent pool to select from.

And that is just five benefits from hundreds.  So not only are people who work at home better off, the benefits spill over to the rest of society.

So what does the research say?

According the a Microsoft survey, “2010 U.S. Remote Working Research Summary National Survey Findings”;

72% of those surveyed prefer very much to work away from the office and 71% ranked themselves as more productive when working away from the office.

According to a Stanford University study, “DOES WORKING FROM HOME WORK?EVIDENCE FROM A CORPORATE EXPERIMENT”, released January 2012;

We find a 12% increase in performance from home-working, of which 8.5% is from working more minutes of per shift (fewer breaks and sick-days) and 3.5% from higher performance per minute (quieter working environment). We find no negative spillovers onto workers left in the office. Home workers also reported substantially higher work satisfaction and psychological attitude scores, and their job attrition rates fell by 50%.

According to Culture RX, people who work at home in a results only work place;

Companies embracing a Results-Only Work Environment enjoy staggering increases in engagement. ROWE teams report an average increase of 35% in productivity by eliminating waste from systems and processes, which increases employee capacity. ROWE teams also experience up to a 90% decrease in voluntary turnover rates. That’s an astonishing number, especially when you consider all the time and costs related to turnover, e.g. administrative time, vacancy costs, recruiting and advertising, selection and interviewing, training and on‐boarding, etc.

I am confident in concluding that people who work at home are better off and society is better off.  What are businesses waiting for? It’s time to make work at home the rule and not the exception.

Think You Have To Do Remote IT Work To Work At Home – Think Again

You don’t have to be some geek (or non-geek, seriously, not every IT worker is a nerd) in a dimly lit room in the middle of the night doing remote IT work to be able to work at home.

Get over it people! (comment directed to employers, bosses, and workers) The world has changed.  It’s 2012, not 1997, and we have the technology to make work at home your daily reality.

Unless you work in a hands on physical labor job (construction, gardening, maid, etc) or you are in a hands on service business (police, firemen, medical, etc), your job can be converted to remote work, and not just remote IT work.

OK, so if you choose to be a funeral director I can’t help you, but who would want to do that anyway?

Even fast food jobs are going remote.

Think of how much the world has changed.  Order a Big Mac lately? The guy or gal behind the counter wasn’t behind the counter at all, they were taking your order in a different state, “McDonald’s Remote Ordering System Is Gaining Popularity” – The Consumerist

Had an X-Ray, CT Scan or MRI recently?

Tax season is creeping up on us, better make a call to your friendly Accountant or Bookkeeper, in the Philippines.

I was a little surprised that tax returns would get farmed out overseas, but I understand, how else would the big firms compete?

So what does this mean for you?

I am all for work going to the most efficient, lowest cost, highest quality location.  At Remote Worker Daily, we promote the remote lifestyle, which often includes workers from around the world.

I only picked three examples of hundreds of potential examples to prove my point that most work can be done remotely, and not just remote IT work or customer service, or sales type jobs.

If you are not in a job that demands physical presence, you need to learn how to profitably work remotely as an employee, contractor, freelancer, or entrepreneur.  Don’t wait, if you are not prepared and skilled for the work from anywhere jobs, someone in another part of the world is.
